Large Loop Excision of the Transformation Zone (LLETZ)

Treatment of the abnormal cervical cells

LLETZ photo.png

This is the treatment to remove abnormal cells from your cervix.

LLETZ procedure is a simple procedure involving a colposcopy first to identify the abnormal cells on the cervix.  Local anaesthetic will be given to the cervix.  Then an electrical wire loop is used to remove the abnormal cells on the cervix.  The procedure takes about 10-15 minutes in total.  Most women do not find it painful, although some may feel some discomfort with the local anaesthetic.

After the LLETZ treatment, you will have some light bleeding or blood stained discharge for 4 weeks.

If your bleeding is heavier than your period, then it is abnormal and you should call for a check up.

The cervix takes about 4 weeks to heal completely.  To allow this healing to take place, we advise you to use sanitary pads instead of tampons until your next period.  Please avoid swimming, spa, bath or sexual intercourse during this 4 weeks.

Many women feel well enough to return to work immediately after treatment completed.

You will be followed up 6 months post surgery and follow National Cervical Screening Guidelines.
